Pakistan Approved Karachi Motorway M-10 to Ease Traffic and Boost Trade
The Pakistan government has officially approved the construction of the Karachi Motorway M-10, a 168-kilometer high-speed corridor designed to ease chronic traffic congestion in Karachi and improve national connectivity. The project will enhance trade, logistics, and regional development while offering relief to millions of daily commuters.
Key Features of Karachi Motorway M-10
- Length: 168 km
- Interchanges: 10 major interchanges
- Route: Direct connection from Karachi to M-6 at Jamshoro, passing through the Kirthar Mountain Range
- Segments:
- Segment 1: Upgradation of 34 km Karachi Northern Bypass into an eight-lane motorway (ICI Bridge to Hamdard University Chowk).
- Segment 2: Construction of 134 km six-lane motorway from Hamdard Chowk to Jamshoro.
- Additional Upgrade: 23 km stretch from Hamdard Chowk to M-9 will be upgraded to six lanes for better port connectivity.
This design creates a high-capacity corridor from Karachi Port to the national motorway network, bypassing the city’s busiest arteries.
Economic and Regional Impact
Federal Communications Minister Aleem Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized the project’s role in:
- Diverting heavy traffic away from Karachi’s inner roads.
- Cutting travel time for both commuters and cargo.
- Boosting trade by enabling faster, safer transport of goods to and from Karachi Port.
- Lowering logistics costs for businesses and transport operators.
- Creating jobs and improving access to markets and services for local communities along the route.
M-10 in Context of Pakistan’s Motorway Network
The M-10 project, supervised by the National Highway Authority (NHA) with feasibility by NESPAK, complements the M-6 Motorway that connects Hyderabad to Sukkur.
- M-6 Investment: Rs363 billion
- Strategic Link: Together, M-6 and M-10 form part of Pakistan’s north-south transport backbone, connecting Karachi to Peshawar.
This positions Karachi as a stronger hub in Pakistan’s trade and logistics landscape.
