The Pakistan-Iran Trade Partnership is entering a new phase as both countries set an ambitious goal of reaching $10 billion in bilateral trade, up from the current $3 billion. During the 22nd meeting of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Economic Commission (JEC) in Tehran on September 16, 2025, Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan emphasized the need to resolve banking, customs, and tariff barriers to strengthen economic ties.

Key Initiatives to Boost Pakistan Iran Trade

Minister Jam Kamal Khan highlighted 17 new protocols under negotiation, covering areas such as:

  • Banking facilitation and financial cooperation
  • Logistics, shipping, and aviation
  • Free zones and special economic zones
  • High-end manufacturing and agriculture
  • Investment promotion and energy projects

These steps are expected to make trade more seamless while fostering foreign direct investment (FDI) in Pakistan’s minerals, energy, and IT sectors.

Border Markets and Local Development

Both nations are working to operationalize border markets and special economic zones, aiming to provide economic opportunities for communities in border regions. These measures not only enhance trade but also improve livelihoods and strengthen regional stability.

Iranian Perspective on Bilateral Trade

Iran’s Minister for Road and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, expressed optimism that Pakistan and Iran would steadily achieve the $10 billion trade target. She also highlighted Iran’s keen interest in joint investment projects in:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Ceramics
  • Engineered goods
  • Other high-value sectors

The Iranian side views the Pakistan-Iran Business Forum as a practical platform for accelerating cooperation and generating concrete outcomes.

Strengthening Economic Bonds

Khan also invited Iranian companies to participate in the upcoming Agriculture Expo 2025 in Pakistan, describing it as a gateway to explore new markets and manufacturing hubs.

Both countries recently signed 12 agreements and MoUs during Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan, covering cooperation in multiple sectors, underscoring the determination of both governments to achieve stronger bilateral trade.
