Gwadar Ferry Service Gets Approval for New Oman Route

Gwadar Ferry Service Gets Approval for New Oman Route

The federal government has officially approved a new Gwadar–Oman ferry service, marking a major development in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen maritime connectivity with Gulf countries. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs confirmed that this project aims to expand regional transport routes and support overseas Pakistanis through easier travel access.

New International Route Strengthens Regional Links

The approval coincides with Pakistan’s recent decision to issue its first international ferry service license to Sea Keepers, authorizing operations between Pakistan, Iran, and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. With the addition of the Gwadar–Oman route, Pakistan is positioning itself as an emerging maritime hub in the region.

MoU Between Pakistan and Oman to Be Signed Soon

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated that both countries will soon sign a memorandum of understanding to formally establish the new route. This agreement will lay the foundation for operational and technical processes before regular ferry trips begin.

Omani Delegation Expected in Pakistan

An Omani delegation is scheduled to visit Pakistan soon to finalize requirements related to safety, navigation, infrastructure, and port coordination. Officials expect the ferry service to start operations shortly after these arrangements are completed.

Boost for Trade and Pakistani Community in Oman

According to the minister, the new ferry service will increase bilateral trade, simplify logistics for business communities, and reduce travel challenges for the large Pakistani workforce residing in Oman. Easier movement of people and goods is expected to enhance economic activity in both countries.

Support for Tourism and Cultural Exchange

The government also highlighted that the ferry link will strengthen tourism and cultural exchange, allowing visitors from both nations to travel more conveniently. With Gwadar’s strategic coastal location and growing development under CPEC, officials expect tourism flow to rise significantly.

Step Toward Broader Regional Maritime Connectivity

Beyond Pakistan and Oman, the new ferry service is expected to support regional connectivity by improving access for neighboring countries seeking routes to Central Asian markets. The Gwadar port’s expansion and new ferry corridors indicate Pakistan’s ambition to become a regional maritime gateway.
