China to Provide High Speed Trains for Islamabad-Rawalpindi Route

Pakistan is set to enter a new era of urban transportation as China high speed trains Pakistan project takes shape. Special train units from China will be imported for the upcoming high-speed service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, scheduled to begin on March 23, 2026. This modern initiative is being jointly developed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Ministry of Railways.

Travel Time Reduced to Just 20 Minutes

The new service will operate between Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi and Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad, using state-of-the-art diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains. These trains are designed to reduce travel time between the twin cities to only 20 minutes, making daily commutes faster and more convenient.

Affordable and Accessible Fares

Authorities have proposed a one-way ticket cost of Rs. 50, ensuring affordability for office workers, students, and general commuters. To further improve accessibility, plans include extending Margalla Railway Station to connect with the Ninth Avenue Metro Station, offering passengers seamless connectivity.

Integration with Metro Network

Once integrated with Islamabad’s Metro Bus System, the high-speed train will provide direct access to major destinations such as:

  • Pak Secretariat
  • Islamabad International Airport
  • Srinagar Highway

This integration is expected to ease congestion and make inter-city travel much more efficient.

Urban Mobility Boost for Twin Cities

Currently, direct train travel between Islamabad and Rawalpindi is limited to longer-distance routes such as the Islamabad Express. The launch of a dedicated high-speed urban train service will mark a significant milestone in Pakistan’s public transport system, bringing modern facilities similar to those found in developed countries.

Officials believe this step will not only enhance urban mobility but also reduce traffic pressure on key roads linking the two cities.

Conclusion

The China high speed trains Pakistan project reflects a strong collaboration between Pakistan and China to modernize the country’s transport sector. By offering fast, affordable, and eco-friendly travel, the Islamabad-Rawalpindi high-speed train service is set to transform daily commuting for thousands of passengers.
