Cloudburst Warnings Issued for Punjab and KP
Lahore | August 16, 2025 — The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert for all districts following forecasts of heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and potential flash floods in parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, the seventh spell of the monsoon season is expected to be more intense, with strong downpours likely in several districts within the next 24 hours.
Emergency Preparations Across Punjab
The PDMA has activated its provincial emergency control room, which remains in constant coordination with district-level emergency centres to monitor the situation.
All commissioners and deputy commissioners have been directed to:
Maintain 24/7 surveillance of rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas.
Deploy rescue teams at vulnerable sites.
Keep lifeboats, life jackets, and emergency equipment ready for rapid response.
Civil defence units, the health department, and other government agencies have also been fully mobilised to respond to any disaster situation.
Hospitals and Fuel Stocks on Alert
DG Kathia stressed the importance of strengthening health facilities across Punjab. He directed hospitals to:
Ensure availability of medical staff and emergency medicines.
Maintain proper drainage systems to prevent flooding within facilities.
Keep fuel reserves stocked for uninterrupted rescue operations.
Public Safety Measures
Local administrations have been instructed to warn residents in vulnerable areas through:
Mosque loudspeakers
Community announcements
Other local communication channels
People living in flood-prone regions are advised to move to safer locations and cooperate fully with authorities.
“The public is advised to strictly follow PDMA guidelines and adopt all precautionary measures to stay safe,” said DG Irfan Ali Kathia.
Why This Alert Matters
The latest warning highlights the increasing risks of monsoon disasters in Pakistan. With climate change intensifying rainfall patterns, cloudbursts and flash floods have become a recurring threat — particularly in northern Punjab and hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The PDMA’s proactive measures aim to minimize damage and protect lives during this severe spell of the monsoon season.
