Hyderabad Kingsmen Announced New Captain for PSL 11

Hyderabad Kingsmen Announce New Captain Marnus Labuschagne for PSL 11

In a major development ahead of the Pakistan Super League’s 11th edition, the Hyderabad Kingsmen announce new captain Marnus Labuschagne as the leader of their debut campaign. The franchise, which will enter the PSL for the first time in 2026, made the official announcement on March 17, 2026, through their social media channels, confirming the Australian Test specialist as their skipper for the upcoming tournament .

The announcement ends weeks of speculation about who would lead the new franchise, with names like Saim Ayub, Hammad Azam, and even Babar Azam previously linked to the captaincy role .

Hyderabad Kingsmen : Official Confirmation

The Hyderabad Kingsmen took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the news with a video post captioned: “𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘 📰 The captain has been crowned. 👑” . The franchise confirmed that the stylish Australian batter will lead the Kingsmen against Lahore Qalandars in the opening game of PSL 11, scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, 2026 .

Marnus Labuschagne was signed directly by the franchise on February 5, 2026, for Rs. 5.88 crore and has expressed eagerness to join the Kingsmen setup and repay the confidence shown by the team and its supporters. He also expressed hope that the side can mount a title challenge in their first PSL campaign .

Why Labuschagne Was Chosen

Although it was initially assumed that veteran Pakistan batter Hammad Azam would lead the Hyderabad Kingsmen in their maiden PSL campaign, the franchise ultimately opted for the Australian’s international experience and leadership credentials .

Renowned for his gritty stroke-play, Marnus Labuschagne has captained Queensland in the First-Class and List-A formats and has also played a pivotal role for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League . The stylish Australian batter brings plenty of international experience and is expected to guide the Kingsmen to success through his batsmanship and leadership acumen .

Saim Ayub Snubbed After T20 World Cup Failure

The decision to appoint Labuschagne comes as a significant blow to Pakistan’s young batting prospect Saim Ayub, who was widely expected to be handed the leadership role for the new franchise .

Saim Ayub had often been considered Pakistan’s bright future. However, in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, his form went downhill as he accumulated just 70 runs in 5 innings at a modest average of 14 . The Pakistan opener had a decent start to the T20 World Cup, as he spearheaded Pakistan to a stunning win over the Netherlands, but his performance dipped with the tournament’s progression .

That being said, Saim Ayub has struggled with consistency for the last year. In the Asia Cup 2025, he scored 4 ducks and managed to accumulate just 37 runs in 7 innings . While his batting has been inconsistent, Saim has contributed with the ball as well, taking 3/25 vs India and 2/7 vs Netherlands during the World Cup .

As a result of his poor performance and inconsistency, the Hyderabad Kingsmen weren’t taking any chances with him in the captaincy role . The PCB selection committee also dropped him from the Pakistan squad for the Bangladesh ODIs before the Kingsmen shattered his captaincy aspirations in the PSL 2026 .

Hammad Azam Also Overlooked

Earlier reports had suggested that US-based cricketer Hammad Azam was the frontrunner for the captaincy role. Hammad Azam previously led the FKS consortium’s Minor League cricket team, the Chicago Kingsmen, and hence, the owners trusted him to repeat the same in the PSL as well . Some media outlets had even listed Hammad Azam as the confirmed captain for Hyderabad Kingsmen in their initial reports . However, the franchise ultimately ignored him, naming the Australian batter as their skipper for the tournament .

Glenn Maxwell and Strong Squad Backing Labuschagne

The Kingsmen have been active in the market as they build a squad for the expanded eight-team season. Earlier, the franchise confirmed the signing of Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, one of the most established names in T20 cricket .

Glenn Maxwell has featured in 129 T20 internationals for Australia, scoring 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 158.42, including five hundreds and 12 fifties, while also taking 49 wickets with his off-spin. His experience stretches across major leagues worldwide, and in overall T20 cricket he has 10,986 runs from 502 matches at a strike rate of 154.16, alongside eight centuries, 58 half-centuries and 196 wickets .

Along with Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell, Pakistan international all-rounder Saim Ayub is among their top signings . The squad has also retained a group of emerging local players, including Usman Khan, Maaz Sadaqat, and Akif Javed .

Coaching Setup with Australian Flavor

The coaching unit reflects a strong Australian influence, with former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie appointed as head coach . Grant Bradburn has been brought in as fielding coach, as the Kingsmen prepare for their first season in the PSL .

Franchise Background and Investment

The Hyderabad franchise, officially referred to as Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen, is owned by the US-based business group FKS consortium . The FKS Group invested PKR 1.75 billion (around $6.25 million) to secure the franchise rights at the auction held on January 8, 2026, at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad .

The team is based in Hyderabad, Sindh, and will play its home matches at Niaz Stadium, a venue that local stakeholders are exploring upgrading with support from the Pakistan Cricket Board .

PSL 11 Opening Match

The Hyderabad Kingsmen will play their first-ever PSL match against defending champions Lahore Qalandars in Lahore on March 26, with less than two weeks to go before their opening fixture in the tournament . The 39-day tournament will feature 44 matches across six Pakistani cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Peshawar .

Analysis by Best Pak Mag:

The decision by Hyderabad Kingsmen to appoint Marnus Labuschagne as their captain represents a fascinating strategic choice for a debut franchise. After weeks of speculation involving Saim Ayub, Hammad Azam, and even Babar Azam, the Kingsmen have opted for international experience over local talent . Labuschagne brings leadership credentials from Queensland and the Brisbane Heat, though his T20 captaincy experience is primarily in longer formats . The snubbing of Saim Ayub, while harsh, reflects the franchise’s merit-based approach. Owner Fawad Sarwar had earlier made it clear that captaincy would not be handed to any player merely on the basis of seniority or star status, and that leadership decisions would be driven by merit and a defined selection process rather than reputation alone . Ayub’s T20 World Cup struggles—70 runs in five innings—made him a risky choice for a new team seeking stability . The Australian flavor extends beyond the captaincy, with Glenn Maxwell in the squad and Jason Gillespie as head coach . This creates a leadership core with deep understanding of each other’s games and high expectations. For a first-year franchise, stability and clarity in leadership are crucial, and the Kingsmen have delivered exactly that. The real test begins on March 26 against Lahore Qalandars.
