Karachi Monsoon Alert 2025: Urban Flooding and Heavy Rainfall
Karachi is on red alert as a powerful monsoon system targets the city with intense downpours, strong winds, and a severe risk of urban flooding. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more than 100mm of rainfall with winds reaching 70 km/h, warning residents to remain cautious until September 11, 2025.
So far, the ongoing rains across Sindh have already claimed 60 lives, highlighting the dangerous impact of this monsoon season.
Widespread Rainfall Across Karachi and Sindh
On Sunday evening, several parts of Karachi — including Bahria Town, Liaquatabad, FB Area, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Scheme-33, Gulshan-i-Hadeed, and M-9 Motorway — reported heavy showers.
The Met Office forecast said the city will face “rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls” until Thursday. The warning also covers districts such as:
- Hyderabad
- Larkana
- Sukkur
- Dadu
- Mirpurkhas
- Tharparkar
- Umerkot
- Sanghar
- Khairpur
- Thatta & Badin
This widespread rainfall is expected to strain drainage systems and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas, raising the risk of flooding.

Karachi’s Emergency Response to Monsoon Crisis
Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that all municipal services and rapid response teams are on high alert.
- Heavy machinery has been deployed in flood-prone zones.
- City wardens and anti-encroachment staff are stationed on major roads.
- A Rain Emergency Center will be established if rainfall intensifies.
- Strict action has been promised against negligence.
Despite the flood risks, some residents welcomed the showers, noting a drop in Karachi’s scorching temperatures.
Power Cuts and Public Safety Concerns
K-Electric has started power outages in vulnerable areas to prevent electrocution risks. However, these outages are adding to public hardship, especially with internet and water supply disruptions in many neighborhoods.
Last month, Karachi witnessed 15 rain-related deaths due to electrocution, building collapses, and drowning. Authorities fear that if drainage systems fail again, the city could face another serious urban flooding disaster.

PMD’s Red Alert and Citizen Advisory
The PMD warning (issued Sept 7 at 5 PM) advises residents to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain.
- Stay away from electricity poles and flood-prone roads.
- Keep emergency supplies ready.
- Follow traffic police instructions and updates.
The storm system is expected to last until Sept 11, meaning Karachi and other Sindh districts must brace for days of rainfall and waterlogging.
