Pakistan China Agricultural Cooperation Grows with New Agreements

Pakistan China Agricultural Cooperation Grows with New Agreements
Pakistan and China have strengthened their agricultural ties with new agreements and increased trade, reaffirming their commitment to long-term cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

At a recent forum held in Islamabad titled “China-Pakistan High-Quality Agriculture Cooperation Development Forum,” officials announced that bilateral agricultural trade rose by 21 percent from January to May 2024, reaching $300 million.

Trade Expansion and New Exports
Shi Yuanqiang, Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, revealed that Pakistan has started exporting fresh cherries, frozen buffalo embryos, and dairy products to China. He also highlighted how agricultural collaboration between the two nations has been institutionalised under CPEC with the formation of joint working groups on agriculture and technology.

This expansion reflects growing confidence in Pakistan China agricultural cooperation and the mutual benefits of deeper trade relations.

Joint Projects Across the Value Chain
Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry, Federal Secretary at Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security & Research, said both countries are working on agricultural projects that cover the full value chain—from seed development to final trade. He specifically mentioned buffalo breed improvement, and chilli and sesame processing as success stories.

Chaudhry also stressed the critical role of private sector investment and innovation in driving progress.

Wider Cooperation in Agriculture
Wang Huihua, Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan, stated that the second phase of CPEC has expanded agricultural cooperation into areas like production, exports, biotechnology, and research and development.

As part of the forum, a detailed case study was presented showcasing real-world examples of successful cooperation in the agriculture sector between the two countries.

New Agreements Signed
To further formalize this growing partnership, four new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the event. These MoUs are expected to support new initiatives in technology transfer, research, and export promotion in agriculture.

The forum was organized by the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan with support from several Chinese enterprises, marking another milestone in Pakistan China agricultural cooperation.

Conclusion
With increasing trade volumes, new export opportunities, and active cooperation on technology and research, Pakistan China agricultural cooperation continues to grow. The recent agreements signed under CPEC show strong commitment from both countries to modernize agriculture, improve food security, and strengthen bilateral ties.
