Pakistan Railways AC Crisis: Minister Orders HQ Air Conditioners Shut Off in Protest
In a bold move to highlight growing concerns over the Pakistan Railways AC situation, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has ordered the shutdown of all air conditioners at the Pakistan Railways Headquarters — including the CEO’s office. This action is in direct protest against delays in installing air conditioning units on passenger trains.
Pakistan Railways AC Delays Spark Internal Protest
Minister Abbasi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the slow progress on the Pakistan Railways AC upgrade project. Of the 100 new AC units that were scheduled for delivery and installation on passenger coaches, only 4 have been implemented so far. This inefficiency has led to discomfort for passengers, especially during the ongoing summer heat.
To pressurize railway management, the minister ordered around 70 AC units to be switched off at the headquarters. While senior officials called the decision “unfair,” Abbasi defended his stance, stating that the comfort of passengers must come before the convenience of bureaucrats.
Passengers Suffer While Pakistan Railways AC Projects Stall
Abbasi warned that if delays continue, he may extend this action to divisional headquarters as well. His goal is to push the department toward serious reform and faster implementation of commuter-related projects, especially those involving Pakistan Railways AC improvements.
“Passengers are suffering in the heat while officials sit in air-conditioned offices,” Abbasi said. “This is unacceptable. We must deliver on our promises.”
Despite Rs. 26 billion being allocated to Pakistan Railways in the 2025 federal budget, the minister expressed frustration over the slow execution of key initiatives like train upgrades and AC installations.

Hanif Abbasi has pledged to oversee reforms personally, ensuring better project planning and transparency in public spending. He believes that addressing the Pakistan Railways AC issue is symbolic of broader challenges within the department — where service quality and public satisfaction must be prioritized.
He emphasized that restoring passenger trust will require accountability, faster service upgrades, and a new attitude from top railway officials.
