Pakistan’s Seafood Exports Surge to $465 Million in 11 Months
Pakistan’s seafood exports witnessed significant growth during the first 11 months of the 2024-25 fiscal year, rising by 13.4% to reach $465 million, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Export volume also increased, hitting 216,350 tonnes, reflecting resilience and determination in the fisheries sector.
Industry Praised for Growth Amid Challenges
The Pakistan Fisheries Exporters Association (PFEA) commended local fishermen and seafood processors for their dedication. Despite rising operational costs and infrastructure limitations, their efforts have kept the industry on a positive trajectory.
However, industry leaders warn that the sector is still facing several key challenges that could limit long-term growth.
Ongoing Challenges for Exporters
One of the biggest problems is the shortage of raw seafood material, which means many processing units are running below capacity. This affects both the quantity and quality of exports.
Additionally, restricted access to key global markets like the European Union and the United States is a major barrier. Trade limitations prevent Pakistani exporters from earning higher profits and reaching full export potential.
PFEA Calls for Sustainable Fishing and Market Access
To ensure steady growth, the PFEA is urging the government to:
Implement sustainable fishing practices to protect marine life.
Improve diplomatic relations to reopen restricted international markets.
Provide infrastructure and policy support for modernizing the seafood supply chain.
Future Potential for the Seafood Sector
Experts believe that with the right government support, Pakistan’s seafood industry could bring in even greater revenues and generate more employment opportunities, especially in coastal communities.
This year’s performance shows strong potential, but strategic action is required to turn short-term success into long-term progress.
