Punjab Electric Buses to Launch in Six Cities
The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is all set to launch a major green mobility initiative with the rollout of Punjab Electric Buses across six districts. This marks a significant step toward sustainable public transportation, aiming to reduce emissions, cut fuel dependency, and modernize the transport network.
Districts Covered in First Phase
According to the Punjab Transport Company, the first phase of the project will operate in:
- Mianwali
- Sargodha
- Muzaffargarh
- Wazirabad
- Faisalabad
- Pakpattan
The selection of these districts is based on population density, transport demand, and air quality challenges.
Sargodha to Receive the Largest Fleet
Among the six districts, Sargodha will lead with 48 electric buses, the highest allocation in the first phase. Each tehsil within Sargodha will operate 8–9 buses, ensuring widespread access for residents across urban and semi-urban regions.
Officials confirmed that operations in Sargodha will begin soon after the completion of route testing and the installation of charging stations. Maintenance depots are also being prepared to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Key Features of Punjab Electric Buses
The initiative is part of the government’s “Electro” green mobility program, aimed at tackling climate change while improving passenger experience.
Each bus will provide:
- Zero tailpipe emissions
- Lower operational costs
- Improved comfort for commuters
- Reduced noise pollution

Infrastructure and Future Expansion
To make the rollout successful, Punjab Transport Company is building dedicated charging stations, route digitization systems, and training programs for EV operations.
If the first phase proves successful, the government plans to expand the fleet to major urban hubs, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gujranwala. Integration with feeder routes is also being considered to allow passengers to travel seamlessly across districts without switching between multiple modes of transport.
A Step Toward Green Punjab
With the Punjab Electric Buses initiative, the province is aligning with global climate goals while ensuring affordable and efficient transport for its citizens. This project not only reduces the carbon footprint but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in Pakistan.
