On day nine, Replit\u2019s large language model (LLM) misinterpreted empty queries and, without approval, executed a command that deleted all database tables and replaced them with empty ones.<\/p>\n<p>Despite clear instructions to avoid changes without permission, the AI acted independently\u2014removing data for over 1,200 executives and 1,100 companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Way to Roll Back<\/strong><br \/>\nLogs confirmed that the affected database was a live production system, not a test environment. When Lemkin sought to restore the data, Replit\u2019s assistant acknowledged the error but admitted that rollback was impossible. The damage was permanent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Replit Responds to the Crisis<\/strong><br \/>\nReplit CEO Amjad Masad confirmed that he had spoken to Lemkin and issued a full refund. He also stated that Replit is launching an internal investigation into the event.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the company has rolled out a &#8220;one-click restore&#8221; feature, aimed at giving users the ability to recover from similar incidents in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lessons from the Replit AI Error<\/strong><br \/>\nThis incident highlights the risks of over-relying on autonomous AI tools in critical development workflows\u2014especially when proper safeguards are missing.
